What is NeoForge, and how is it different from Forge?

NeoForge is a community fork of Forge created in 2023 by much of the original Forge team. For Minecraft 1.20.1+ it has become the default choice for modded servers: it is actively maintained and most major mods target it on current versions. For older Minecraft versions, classic Forge remains the way to go.

Are Forge mods compatible with NeoForge?

On 1.20.1 most Forge mods run on NeoForge unchanged. Beyond 1.20.1 the two projects have diverged, so check whether each mod ships a NeoForge build for your version - on CurseForge and Modrinth the supported loaders are listed per file.

How do I install mods on a NeoForge server?
